U-M Departments

University departments may purchase annual Yellow or Orange permits or a University Business Vehicle permit. These permits are for departmental business purposes, not for personal parking.

  1. Yellow Parking - Yellow parking is located outside campus core areas, but within walking distance of some U-M buildings. Yellow permits are also valid in Orange lots. The permit is available in the hang tag style.
  2. Orange Parking - Orange parking is located in areas that typically require a short University shuttle or bus ride to campus core areas and within walking distance of some U-M buildings. The permit is available in the hang tag style.
  3. University Business Vehicle Parking - The annual U-M Business Vehicle permit provides parking in designated Business Vehicle spaces located in many University lots and some structures or in any Blue, Yellow or Orange parking space. It is also honored in the East Medical Center Drive parking structure (Parking A). The permit is available as an access card. The access card is used to activate the Blue structure gates and also act as the permit. Therefore, the access card must be displayed from the parker's rear view mirror at all times when parked. Chains are provided with the Business Vehicle access card for this purpose.

For departments that need parking only occasionally, the daily U-M Business Vehicle AVI permit is available that provides pre-paid parks in Blue Structures and the East Medical Center Drive parking structure (Parking A).

Vehicles leased from PTS Fleet Services are considered business vehicles and may park in the special designated Business Vehicle parking spaces or in any Blue, Yellow or Orange parking space.

Department Guest Parking

If your department regularly hosts guests in small numbers, PTS offers the Departmental Guest Permit Program. The permits are supplied in paper (for surface parking lots only) or pre-paid coupons (for use at the Palmer Structure Visitor parking area.)

Your department is responsible for completing and distributing the permits to guests, as well as for maintaining and submitting paperwork for billing purposes. Exceptions to allow guest parking in gate-controlled areas will be considered based on departmental needs and current parking conditions.

If your department hosts guests only occasionally, you should seek alternative parking for them outside the AVI controlled areas whenever possible. Metered or cashier attended parking is available in strategically located areas on campus.

When use of color-coded parking is necessary, PTS can provide permits or access cards. Due to the complexities of using cards at gate-controlled areas, however, this option should only be considered when there are no alternatives.

Parking Customer Services staff will be glad to help you select the best possible choice for your guests.
