Eligibility

Annual Permit Parking

Faculty and Staff

Faculty must have a 0% appointment or above (tenure track), and staff at least a 50% appointment to be eligible for parking. Eligible faculty and staff may select from Gold, Blue, Yellow and Orange parking. (Please note: because of availability, the number of Gold permits is limited.)

The Blue and Yellow AVI device is offered as a "continuous parking option" - in other words, it's automatically renewed for you each year as a payroll deduction, until you return it to Parking and Transportation Services.

All other permits are valid for one permit year (July 1 - June 30) only.

Ineligible Staff

Staff with less than a 50% appointment, temporary staff, affiliates and other non-University staff are considered "ineligible parkers" and do not automatically get a parking permit.

However, if you fall into this category, you can submit an application for a parking assignment. These assignments are made at the discretion of Parking Customer Services, and are based on the specific needs of each applicant and the parking availability at the time of application.

To apply for a parking permit, you should ask your department to complete a Parking Request Form.

Students

Student parking permits are available to junior, senior and graduate students that are registered for classes. Freshman and sophomore students are eligible for Student Storage parking permits only.

Freshman and sophomore students with exceptional needs who require the use of their vehicles may appeal the parking eligibility policy by completing a U-M Student Parking Appeal form. The form is also available at the PTS office at 523 South Division Street or may be ordered by calling (734) 764-8291. All appeals will be answered within 5 business days.

Appeals for the following reasons will NOT be considered:

  • Work locations or responsibilities
  • Personal convenience
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Proximity of permanent residence

Juniors and seniors are eligible to purchase "Student Orange" permits.

Graduate students may select from five parking options:

  • Student Orange
  • Student Yellow
  • After Hours
  • Student Orange with After Hours
  • Student Yellow with After Hours

All daytime student parking is located on the perimeter of campus. Permits are valid for one permit year only (July 1 - June 30). Only permits purchased from the Parking Services office are valid. Purchases may be made at the PTS office at 523 South Division Street.

U-M Retirees

U-M retirees are eligible for free After Hours parking permits. This permit grants access to Blue parking areas after 3:00 pm Monday through Friday, and all day on the weekends.

If you retired prior to July 2000, you are eligible to purchase the annual retiree Blue permit. Permits are available at the PTS office 523 South Division Street, or call Parking Customer Service at (734) 764-8291 for other options.

U-M Departments

University departments may purchase annual Yellow or Orange permits, or a University Business Vehicle permit. Please note that these permits are for departmental business purposes, not for personal parking.

If your department needs parking only occasionally, you may want to save money and obtain the daily Business Vehicle AVI device that provides pre-paid parks in structures.

These permits may be purchased at the PTS office at 523 South Division Street.
